Proshow Gold--problem playing dvds
Nov 25, 2005
This is really a two-part problem.
I am using the evaluation version of ProShow Gold. Was pretty satisfied until I ran into this issue. I can burn a DVD successfully and play it on my PC and laptop, but it won't play in my (relatively new) DVD player to view on TV. The player is a Toshiba SD-K700. I have tried several discs--the player flashes "loading" for several seconds, then "disc error."
I thought of burning an ISO image, instead of burning directly from ProShow. But, here's the odd thing. I create a DVD ISO image in Proshow; then when I attempt to burn it to DVD using Nero express (Burn Image function), I get a message that I am trying to burn to incompatible media and I need to burn it to CD-RW (not DVD.) As if Nero thinks the Proshow DVD ISO image is a CD image.
So I'm stymied. I can, in fact, burn a successful Video CD which plays in my stand-alone DVD player, but I need/want to be able to burn DVDs that I can play.
I've emailed Proshow support, but they are closed till Monday, so thought I'd try here while I'm waiting. Any suggestions?? Anyone had similar problems?

Does your set top player read the DVD's you're using?
I had a similar problem. Turned out I was using DVD+R discs; my set top player won't read those. Went to DVD-R and all is well.

hmmm you may be right...I am using DVD+R discs. The documentation for the DVD player isn't really specific but its worth a try.

Hey Janet,
What type media are you using (DVD+R or DVD-R). I looked up your DVD player on videohelp.com and it states that it works with the -R and works with few +R media. I would try -R if your able to and you have not tried it. I would also try another brand of blank DVD's. Some DVD players are quite picky when it comes to this.
As for the ISO file, I dont know why Nero would be telling you to use CD media instead of DVD. I have not had that problem and I use that option quite often. Have you tried creating another one just to see ? Have you tried different burning software ? If you want, make a very small slideshow (couple of slides) and create an ISO and try to burn that. If it still gives you that error and you dont have a different ISO burning package I would be glad to try it for you if you emailed me the ISO file.
Good luck

Re: Proshow Gold--problem playing dvds
Janet: There is greater compatibility with DVD-R than with DVD+R. Notwithstanding, I use Taiyo Yuden DVD+R discs, and change the book-type using Plextools Pro. This causes all DVD players to read the disc as a DVD-RAM, and virtually all players can read these disks.
DVD Dycrypter does the same thing.
Rule #1: always use the best disks you can; cheap = incompatibility.

Thanks I do think that the problem may be +R vs -R; tomorrow I will go buy some -R discs and see if that does the trick. These discs are Verbatim which I'd heard were some of the best, at least the best readily available. I've always used Mitsui Gold for CD's and perhaps I'll need to get some Taiyo Yuden DVD's but first I will see if I can buy some -R discs locally and see what happens.

The iso thing is more mysterious. i've tried it twice with two different sliedshows, same problem. I do have an OEM version of Sonic Record Now! that came with my Dell, but that doesn't seem to support burning an image (it says it should, but it must be disabled, because its not in the menu.) I may try moving the .iso file to my laptop and see what it thinks of it there (although its the same Nero Express software on the laptop.) Thanks for the offer of burning the ISO for me, I might take you up on it if I can't figure out what's going on!

Re: Proshow Gold--problem playing dvds
Janet, When you opened Nero Express have you clicked the DVD tab top left of opening menu. I had the same problem, the burmer thinks you want to burn a CD disk not a DVD.

Re: problem solved, roundaboutly
Well to close this up, I bought DVD-R discs only to discover that my disc burner in my 1-year old Dell XPS doesn't write DVD-R, only DVD+R!! So here I was with completely incompatible systems---so do I buy a new burner? or a new DVD player?!
Fortunately, my laptop (Averatec 3250) burns both +R and -R --so, solution was to install Proshow on the laptop, move the show files to the laptop and burn the DVD-R disc there. What a royal pain in the you-know-what. But, it worked, and the disc plays in my DVD player and looks great (much better than the Video CD looked.)
So I guess if I want to burn a DVD that I can watch this is the route I'll have to take.

Janet:
Change the booktype setting using Nero Express. The instructions and background info are here: http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php#NeroExpress-Booktyping-Bitsetting
You will be able to use your PC burner (if it compatible) and create DVD's that will be readable by more players.

ImgBurn to burn *.iso
I'd also recommend using http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn your iso images (you could double-check that the booktype has been set to DVD-ROM through ImgBurn as well).
